Maskarade – The Newest Project From Brandon Bolmer
Brandon Bolmer – Some of you may have heard of him and some of you may not. The first time I heard of Brandon Bolmer was years and years ago. It must have been 2003 when he was frontman of a band called “Yesterday’s Rising”. The band instantly caught my attention with Brandon’s unique singing voice and fearsome growls. I followed Yesterday’s Rising through their 2 EPs, 1 full length album, and various unreleased songs until their demise in February 2010 when Brandon announced he would be the new lead singer for the post-hardcore band “Chiodos”.
This new venture turned out to be even more short-lived than his previous. In March of 2012, after releasing 1 full length album with Chiodos, Bolmer announced his decision to leave the band to pursue his own project. This new project is what I’m hoping to inform the dubstep community about…
The former Yesterday’s Rising and former Chiodos frontman has begun work on a solo project under the moniker “Maskarade”. He now produces and provides vocals for dubstep-esque/electronica songs (much like Sonny Moore, who like a caterpillar in a cocoon left the post-hardcore band “From First To Last” to evolve into the dubstep butterfly, “Skrillex”). There, you will find four original songs plus one remix of up-and-coming female vocalist Kimbra’s hit “Settle Down”.
Although Maskarade’s style does not have the hard-hitting heavy drops of artists like Skrillex and Bassnectar, I must recommend downloading the collection of songs that Bolmer has made available via Sound Cloud. Not only do I find the music to be a great listen, but it’s a great example of just how possible it is to make a break through in this dubstep industry. All you need is a dubstep maker like DubTurbo and you could be producing your own music just as simply and easily as Brandon Bolmer!

Electronic Music Will Invade New York At The Electric Zoo
In the ever-changing world of music, there is one type of music that has been getting significantly more attention in recent years. This August, the Electric Zoo festival is coming to New York and bringing close to 100 artists during the 3-day festival.

Pierre David Guetta, originally from France, is better known by simply David Guetta, and got his start as a club DJ in the ’80s and ’90s. In recent years, he has done collaborations with Akon, Kelly Rowland, Kid Cudi, and LMFAO. His songs have reached as high as #1 in UK music charts, and he was recently called the worlds most popular DJ, as decided by a poll in DJ Mag. He has won two Grammy awards and numerous other awards, and his participation in the Electric Zoo festival will definitely help draw crowds to New York.
Another headliner, Tiesto, is a DJ from The Netherlands whose popularity has grown exponentially in the last couple years. Ranked #3 in the DJ Mag popularity poll, his work is helping to bring house music into the mainstream. Though he usually describes his music as electro house or progressive house, he also represents the lesser-known genre of dubstep.
With so many different acts, and such big names as David Guetta and Tiesto, Electric Zoo is predicted to be a huge end-of-summer event this year in New York. Fans will show up in flocks, rain or shine, to listen to these DJ’s mix their music and drop beats. Attendees will dance, dance, dance until the last song ends, and it is guaranteed to entertain even those who don’t typically listen to dubstep or electronic music.
Dubstep Maker X – Skrillex @ Bamboozle Festival Recap
Every year, the Bamboozle festival comes to New Jersey and draws fans from all over the tri-state area. In recent years, the festival has taken place at the Meadowlands, but this year Bamboozle returned to its original location in Asbury Park. The acts range from punk rock to alternative, and sometimes even rap, but the talk of the 2012 fest was electronic dance music visionary Sonny “Skrillex” Moore.
Playing in a deejay booth that resembled a space-age army tank, Skrillex headlined the first day of the 3-day festival and had the huge crowd on its feet from beginning to end. As is typical at electronic music shows, attendees of all ages swung glow sticks and glow necklaces, jumping up and down to the beat of the sounds Skrillex was creating with his turntables, controls, and mostly, his imagination.
His 90-minute show was a nonstop party, but what most concert-goers didn’t know was that Skrillex was putting on another show that night. After his Bamboozle slot, he made his way to the Stone Pony and rocked another set. Though smaller, the second crowd was equally enthusiastic, dancing to the music as if in a trance.
Whether electronic music is your typical “type” of music or not, it is hard to deny the amount of sheer talent that goes into producing the types of songs that Skrillex plays. The crowds at both New Jersey venues showed their appreciation simply through their enthusiasm, dancing, swinging glow sticks, singing, and even fist-pumping to every beat.
The genre of electronic music is quickly growing, and if Skrillex’s show at the Bamboozle festival is any indication, it isn’t going anywhere soon. Crowds are welcoming the creativity-driven music because of it’s juxtaposition, which is best explained as a bar of soft vibraphone followed by an attack of distorted bass synthesizer. It is so different from any type of music today, and Skrillex is making it something that almost everyone can enjoy, whether their usual music style is punk rock, country, or even rap.
The Bamboozle festival welcomes different types of music every year, and Skrillex was a valuable addition to this year’s lineup. Asbury Park was bumping with nonstop bass lines, and attendees were treated to 90 minutes of creativity, imagination, and innovation. With any luck, Skrillex will return to a New Jersey stage in the near future so that fans can once again get lost in the music and dance the night away.
Ultra Music Festival – Miami’s Biggest Electronic Music Event
Every March, electronic music artists and fans take over Miami, Florida, during the Ultra Music Festival. The festival takes place in Bicentennial Park or Bayfront Park, and attracts hundreds of thousands of people every year. Though it started out as a 1-day event, Ultra Music Festival got bigger every year, eventually expanding to a 3-day festival as of 2011.
For the first time in 2011, fans attending the festival were required to purchase a 3-day pass instead of a single day ticket. Pre-sale tickets sold out in 20 minutes in 2012, and ranged from $149-229. The growing popularity of electronic music has caused tickets to sell out faster every year, and some fans even pay $599 for VIP passes. Interestingly, the Ultra Music Festival is crossing the Atlantic and expanding to international crowds. In June 2012, the festival will take place in Warsaw, Poland and feature some of the world’s biggest DJ’s.
Headliners for the 2012 Miami show included Avicii, Skrillex, David Guetta, and Tiesto. Swedish DJ Tim Bergling, better known as Avicii, was ranked #6 in DJ Magazine’s top 100 DJ’s in the world in 2012. During his set at Ultra Music Festival, he was joined onstage by the legendary Madonna, further proving just how popular electronic music is getting. The 2012 festival attracted 165,000 fans to Miami, and shattered Miami’s record for tickets sold for a single event.
Due to the increased popularity of the genre and the festival itself, dates to the 2013 festival have already been announced. From March 22-24, 2013, Ultra Music Festival will once again come to Miami and draw hundreds of thousands of electronic music fans to Bayfront park for three days of DJ’s, glow sticks, and dancing.
